Wegovy, Mounjaro and Unintended Pregnancy

by Dr. Leon Katz | June 17 2024

For women of childbearing age who struggle with obesity, anti-obesity medications like Wegovy™ and Zepbound™ may interfere with oral contraceptives, increasing the risk of unintended pregnancy. Drug manufacturers recommend switching to non-oral birth control methods like IUDs, implants, or condoms when taking these medications.

While studies suggest Wegovy may not significantly impact oral contraceptive levels, caution is still advised. Close collaboration between the weight loss specialist, OB/GYN, and patient is crucial.

On the positive side, losing weight can improve chances of conception and a healthier pregnancy. However, these medications should be stopped at least 2 months before attempting pregnancy, with proper tapering under medical supervision.
